| November 15 | HOPS BOPS - Beer of Philadelphia
(15th in a Series) Hosted by: Red Bell Brewing Co., Philadelphia, PA NO BEER STYLE POLICE ALLOWED Tired of the "Style Nazis" goose stepping across your score sheets? Do you feel that the need to pigeonhole beer into a predetermined parameter stifles the creativity of your brewing process? Have you brewed a beautiful Dry Stout that you dry hopped, have all your friends say, "This is the best beer you ever brewed-- it's a winner!" -only to be shot down by the judges because it's "not appropriate to style"? If you've noticed you either have to choose between brewing to compete or brewing to be creative and all of this has turned you off from entering homebrew competitions, then this year's HOPS BOPS Homebrew Competition is for YOU! So send in your Wheat IPA's, your Rye Pilsners, your dry hopped Octoberfests. We promise the criteria for this competition will be- Is it clean?, Is it good?, Is it well balanced?--Beer style be damned! The only caveat is- if your beer does resemble a classic style, please explain in a few words why your beer is not that style. (Example: It's a dry stout, but I dry hopped it.). (Classic styles are still welcome, within the criteria.)(Or if it is a classic style, please tell us.) So the gloves are off, restrictions are off- and may the best beer win! |

HOPS (Puck-In-The-Head) Night Out Clear your calendar on Sunday November 22. HOPS has a very special HOPS NIGHT OUT(tm) planned for you. At 5:00 pm the AHL Champion Philadelphia Phantoms defend their Calder Cup title against the Hartford Wolfpack at the F.U. Center. Since the Phantoms usually play across the parking lot at the Spectrum this will be an opportunity to check out the state-of-the-art facility at rock bottom prices. Adult tickets are $13.00 and child tickets are $7.00. Also on tap for the day will be a tour and possibly a tasting at the Red Bell Brew Pub. Red Bell makes much of the tasty brew served at the F.U. Center on location. If you were not one of the fifty or so people at our last HOPS NIGHT OUT(tm) at the Phantoms a little primer may be in order. The Phantoms and their opponents play a fiestier brand of hockey than their NHL counterparts. The hard hitting style lends itself to players being more likely to drop the gloves and mix it up a little bit. Since every player dreams of playing in the big leagues they play with a level of enthusiasm rarely found in the NHL, in hopes of catching the eye of some major league general manager. IN addition to the spirited action during the game intermissions are a lot of fun too. With on ice contests, tee shirt give-a-ways, and abbreviated peewee games, intermissions are an absolute hoot. Also the F.U. Center is worth the trip itself. With interactive displays hightlighting Philadelphia;s sports and entertainment history and arcade style games, even non-hockey fans would have a hard time not having fun. To reserve your spot call Mitch at (215) 386-8350 days or (215) 745-0710 evenings. Don't miss your chance to see the NHL stars of tomorrow play in the AHL today. |
