Homebrewers of Philadelphia and Suburbs
(HOPS)
Presents
Best of Philly Homebrew Competition
A BJCP Sanctioned Event
(30th in a Series)
Saturday, October 25, 2014 9:30 am
Hosted by: Homebrewers of Philadelphia and Suburbs
Location:
Nodding Head Brewery & Restaurant
1516 Sansom St
Philadelphia, PA
This is an opportunity for you to have your homemade beer evaluated by
BJCP qualified judges. The competition is open only to BJCP Categories 1-23 (beer only).
Awards will be given for 1st place winning beers in all
categories and Best of Show.
Evaluation forms will be e-mailed back to all contestants shortly after
the competition. Anyone wanting a paper copy can pick them up at Home Sweet Homebrew
a week after the event.
One entry from the Best-Of-Show flight will be chosen to be co-brewed at Nodding Head Brewery at some future date. The chosen entry need not place in the BOS flight. The winning entry will be chosen by members of Nodding Head staff based solely on their (possibly biased, though always respected) opinion. Nodding Head Brewery reseves the right to use the brewed beer as an entry to the Pro-Am competition of the GABF, again based on their opinion of the quality of the beer produced and the ability to enter. The winning brewer assumes responsibility for all costs incurred in co-brewing the beer at Nodding Head as well as personal participation in the GABF, should the beer be entered in the Pro-Am competition.
We are a small, local competiton. Our prizes typically are gift certificates to local establishments. Although we do not discourage non-locals from submitting entries, take this as fair warning in regards to prizes.
If you have any questions, call Home Sweet Homebrew or send
e-mail
to the event organizer.
Competition Guidelines and Entry Requirements
-
The competition is open to all homebrewers whose sole purpose is to make beer for consumption by themselves, their families, and their friends. If any commerical interest or intent is discovered (e.g. you are perfecting your recipes to go commercial and you publically state as much), the entries, regardless of how good they may be, will be disqualified from winning.
-
The fee is $7 for each entry.
Checks or money orders must be made payable to
HOPS. No cash or credit cards will be accepted.
-
Entries may be dropped off at any of the locations listed below.
Dates when entries will be accepted are also listed.
All mailed entries should be sent to the
Home Sweet Homebrew location.
They must be addressed as "HOPS BOPS, c/o Home Sweet Homebrew" to
ensure that the packages do not get misplaced by accident.
If you are mailing your entry, please package carefully and do not use USPS.
-
Drop off locations are accepting entries for more than one competition.
Entries should be clearly labeled
as "HOPS BOPS" to avoid confusion with these other competitions.
-
Judges are no longer allowed to bring their entries the day of the competition.
All bottles must be at Home Sweet Homebrew by COB 10/21.
-
TWO (12-16oz) bottles per entry.
Bottles must be free of labels or identifying marks.
Printed crown caps must be blacked out.
An online-generated
bottle ID form
must be attached to each bottle with a rubber band.

-
Only one entry per BJCP subcategory is allowed with a maximum of two
entries per BJCP category.
-
Beer will be judged according to the category it was entered in.
Please consult the
BJCP Style Guidelines.
The competition is restricted to categories 1-23.
Any ciders or meads entered will be disqualified, though they will be
happily drunk and verbally judged by the competition staff.
-
The competition organizers reserve the right to collapse categories as
they deem appropriate.
-
All entries become property of HOPS. No entries will be returned.
Only home-brewed (not commercial or commercially assisted) beers
may be entered (must conform to AHA guidelines for homebrew).
-
Entries that do not follow these guidelines and entry requirements will be disqualified.
Disqualified entries may be judged but are not eligible for any of the awards.

Parking information for Nodding Head
To those driving in: It's a big city with big city parking
rules, so pay attention to the signs. The PPA is very efficient at its job.
There is a relatively cheap weekend parking in the surface lot at 24th and Sansom (credit card only)
and below the remodeled building on 21st and Market Sts (see the sign on Market St just East of 21st).
Public transportation is an excellent
alternative.
There is a public parking lot across the street from Nodding Head, and
a second between 16th and 17th on Sansom. There are no discounts available for
these lots.
